EDGE PROJECT PORTFOLIO

Project Deliverables
For my EDGE Project I wanted to learn how others and myself included could learn and gain experience through applying what they learn in school to jobs and careers they will hold after school. I visited with the controller’s office at SUU and they agreed to let me create an instruction book for the Accounts Receivable position on campus. After visiting with the accountants at SUU it seemed best that I focus my time and energy into creating instructions for creating new loans, reinstating existing loans, reconciling accounts, creating different kinds of invoices and itemized statement, as well as using a system called “Banner” to enter in student information and allow for 3rd party members to pay for students going to SUU. It took a lot of time and attention to work on crafting and forming the different ideas we came up with into the book, but the hard work paid off and I was able to accomplish what was asked of me.

Reflection
I would say that after everything that this project was a success. As I look back, I am grateful that I chose to do this specific project. Not only was I able to complete a much needed task to help train future employees of the school, I was able to lighten a burden on my supervisors and I was able to learn very important life lessons not only for my future career in accounting but also in life. I realized how important communication is. There was a lot that needed to get done and I only knew how to do some of it because of the communication that I had with the accountants. When problems came up it was easier to solve them when I communicated and got help.
One of the difficult situations that came up is SUU has a new computer system to track and input information that was very difficult to use. It took some time to figure it out which took away from me helping in other ways, but i got everything done that I set out to do, I just wish that I could have helped more during my time there.
